Great Wine Update

Well, I continued buying last month (don’t tell the boss) and came up with some winners.

Windwalker is now in stock with several choices. This is one of my favorite wineries. They are located in Fair Play, El Dorado County. We now have stock on their Barbera, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Grand Chardonnay and Viognier. I have just received the second order (sold out in 4 days) of the Barbera and Sangiovese. These went quickly while on tasting. I compare all Barberas to this one. If you like a buttery, full of oak chardonnay with a hint of caramel, try their Grand Chardonnay (on tasting now and proving very popular). Dominic, the winemaker, will be here August 10th for another winemaker’s tasting event. Don’t miss this one! Shop on-line at www.discovercal.com

I brought Bogle’s Phantom blend to our shelves. It is a wonderful Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Old Vine Mourvedre combination. I have this on tasting now and it looks like I will have to re-order soon. This along with their Pinot Noir and Petite Sirah rounds out a complete Bogle selection.

Have you heard of Avalon? No, not the island. The Cabernet Sauvignon. I have and I bought it. It is a great Cab at $20.00 from Napa Valley. Very nice fruit with a great mouthfeel and finish.

Vino Con Brio from Lodi has joined us with a variety of wines. My favorites so far are their Brilliante, a Viognier / Roussanne / Pinot Grigio blend; Vibrante, a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenach and Petite Sirah; Passione Rose, made from Sangiovese grapes; Pinotage, developed from the Pinot and Cinsault grapes; and their Late Harvest Zinfandel, very nice after dinner and a cool bottle. In addition we also have from Vino Con Brio a Vignoier, Sangiovese and an Old Vine Zinfandel. The Passione rose and Brilliante sold out while on tasting. Shop on-line at www.discovercal.com

The newest Pinot Noir is from Baileyana out of San Luis Obispo. I got a special price that is $5.00 savings per bottle at $29.99. If you have a favorite Pinot you might have a new favorite after tasting this one. On tasting now.

For Mother’s day I offered on tasting a blend form Mt. Vernon winery. It is 1/3 Cabernet sauvignon, 1/3 Merlot, 1/3 cabernet Franc. A delightful Meritage that drinks well now and will do well if cellared for a while. They donate a portion of the proceeds to the search for a cure to breast cancer. A nice wine and a good cause. I was also pouring Scharffenberger Champagne that day. It was fun.

Two new Zinfandels from Montevina wine have been added. There SHR (School House Road) Field Blend and "Deaver Ranch" Zinfandel. The SHR Zin is a true field blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Barbera. There’s a lot of technical stuff about what variety is planted in which row, etc. It’s just a great Zin! Period. The grapes from Deaver vineyard are from 100 year old vines. Talk about "old vine’. This makes for one of the best old vine zins I’ve ever tasted. Their TDO Barbera, Sangiovese and Syrah continue to be favorites of our customers.

Last month I found a Black Muscat from Shenandoah Vineyards. I put it on tasting and sold out. Look for more in the near future along with their White Zin. This winery is 100% organic.

There were two whites that did extremely well on tasting. A very dry Fume Blanc and a Viognier / Roussanne blend from David Girard.

In conclusion

Let me know what you think of the selection on your next visit. If you haven’t been in for a while there are new wines for tasting. I try and keep the tastings rotated frequently to keep things fresh. Don’t forget about joining us June 29th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. for our Winemaker’s tasting event with Maddalena Winery.
