Second Saturday at Discover California!
  October 13th 4-8pm
Featuring paintings by JoAnn Hill
Joann grew up in the quaint delta town of Rio Vista and discovered, at a young age, a natural ability to paint. While still in her teens, Joann's work began to be included in private and corporate collections.
Rarely using a photo or setting a scene, Joann allows each piece to develop naturally as she paints. She uses a range of mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencils and inks to breathe life into otherwise ordinary subjects.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Discover California! Breast Cancer Awareness Basket $94.99
A portion of the sales of this basket will be donated to Breast Cancer Research.  This basket is designed around the Mt. Vernon Winery Breast Cancer Research Chardonnay - a medium bodied, Chardonnay bursting with apricot and pear fruit flavors and a creamy finish.  Our best Regular Chardonnay by far. With more oak than the last few vintages this wine has mainly American oak and is soft with a vanilla finish.  The basket also includes a pink ribbon picture frame, jewelry box and charm, and a dark chocolate & raspberry Ghirardelli bar.

Speaking of new............
Last month I introduced Steele Vineyards to Discover California! with their Chardonnay.  It went over so well, this month I've included their Merlot and Pinot Blanc.  Also from Steele are two fun wines, Writer's Block Syrah and Shooting Star Zinfandel.  Literature has certainly paid many tributes to wine: Falstaff and his sack, and Hemingway’s movable feasts always included wine in beautiful Paris.  We believe this wine is as well constructed as some of the best prose of the past. The Writer’s Block Syrah begins with soft aromas of coffee, black berry and tobacco. Flavors of fresh plum, currents and smoke are framed within soft tannins that hint of cocoa. The medium finish shows a touch of anise, leaving a bit of spice upon its departure. The Shooting Star Zinfandel has aromas of raspberry and other ripe black fruit, butter, and just a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg.  The tannins and acids in this wine are soft but distinct.  Cedar tones with just a hint of plum make the finish a wonderful exclamation point.
And, back in stock, is the latest release of the Viognier / Roussanne blend from David Girard Vineyards. It is a wonderful alternative to Chardonnay for the upcoming holidays.

Cool Weather Stew
Serve Mt. Vernon Barbera with this cool weather stew.

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon chilli powder
2 1/2 pounds round steak, diced
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 onions, sliced
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes, undrained
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 cups diced potato
2 cups chopped carrot

  1. Combine flour, paprika, salt and 1 teaspoon chili powder. Add steak and toss to coat.
  2. Heat oil in a large stockpot. Brown meat over medium heat, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add onion and garlic; cook until soft. Add tomatoes with juices, 3 tablespoons chili powder, cinnamon, cloves and red pepper flakes. Cover and simmer for 2 hours.
  4. Add potato and carrot and cook, uncovered, until vegetables are tender, about 45 minutes.

Makes 8 servings.

Did You Know........
In 1870 the United States unknowingly exported Phylloxera (a louse that attacks roots of grape vines) to Europe which virtually destroyed all of Europe's vineyards. As a consequence, all European vineyards had to be grafted to native American rootstock, which is Phylloxera resistant, and re-planted. And you thought the French were upset about 1973!
